Rossica Translation Prize 2008The Rossica Prize has been awarded biennially since 2005 for the best new translation of a high-quality Russian literary work into English. £5,000 is divided between the translator and the publisher. The Rossica Prize aims to promote the best of Russian literary culture in the English-speaking world, rewarding and encouraging the translation of a broad range of authors, genres and periods. It recognizes the vital role of translation in culture and the contribution that Russian literature continues to make towards enriching the intellectual life of people worldwide.
The Rossica Prize Committee includes distinguished literary figures – Literary Editor of The Independent and founder of the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize Boyd Tonkin, academic and translator Prof. John Elsworth, the publisher Christopher MacLehose, Director of the British Centre for Literary Translation Amanda Hopkinson and Director of Literature at British Council Susanna Nicklin.
We are currently accepting submissions for the Rossica Prize 2009, the deadline for which is 31 December 2008. The literary work must be written in Russian by any author, present or past, and published between 2007 and 2008. There are no restrictions on the nationality of the translator or the place of publication.
To apply, 3 copies of the work in the original and 4 copies of the English translation should be sent to Academia Rossica.
The prize award will take place in London on 24 May 2009, the Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the creators of the Slavic alphabet.
