Arts Council England (ACE) Support for Literary Translation

Literary translation is eligible for funding under the Arts Council's Grants for the Arts programme. On the whole, priority is given to translation of fiction and poetry; literary non-fiction titles are also eligible if they are exceptional in terms of literary and stylistic innovation. Banff International Literary Translation Centre (BILTC)

Unique to North America, the BILTC residency program affords literary translators a period of uninterrupted work on a current project, within an international community of translators. For more information, click here. Financial assistance is available for this program.

CANADA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS

The department of Canadian Heritage has doubled its grant to the Canada Council for the Arts for the translation of works by Canadian authors.  The Council's translation grants programme provides financial assistance for the first translation of literary works written by Canadian authors.
Translations must be into French, English, or an Aboriginal language for publication in Canada. in addition to this the Council is also increasing its investment in the promotion of translated works to ensure their visibility in Canada.

English PEN - Writers in Translation

Writers in Translation is English PEN's newest programme.  Essentially, they act as a grant-giving body, awarding funds to support new books being published for the first time in English translation, and which have a clear link to the PEN charter.

EXILED WRITERS INK TRANSLATION SCHEME

Are you a writer forced to live in exile?
Are you finding it hard to get translated and published in the UK?
Exiled Writers INK is running a scheme to match writers in exile with expert translators in the UK.  You will work together intensively over a year, leading to publications, readings and new opportunities. If you are interested please send a CV in English and ten poems, or two short stories in your own language to:

Romanian Cultural Institute

The Romanian Cultural Institute Publishing House offers a Translation and Publication Support Programme (TPS) aimed at enhancing the access of the foreign audience to Romanian literature and supporting the presence of Romanian authors on the international book market. Translation grants of up to 100% to assist with the translation and in some cases production costs of publication of fictional and non-fictinal works in the fields of literature and humanities, belonging to authors of Romanian orgin.  Only publishing houses outside Romania are eligible to apply.

SUISS Edwin Morgan Fellowship

A free place is offered at the International Summer School: Text and Context: British and Irish Literature from 1990 to the present,
Payable in Edinburgh as a deduction of the course fee which covers tuition, accommodation and most meals and full use of the facilities of Edinburgh University Library and the National Library of Scotland. Applications are invited from translators with an interest in 20th century and contemporary Scottish writing.

Swiss Society of Authors - theatre translation grants

The Societe Suisse des Auteurs (SSA) has grants available for native Swisss translators or translators living in Switzerland. Up to three grants of 8,000 Swiss Francs are available for a translation of a play written by a living Swiss playwright. Translations must be into and from one of the 4 Swiss languages.

The Centre National du Livre

The Centre National du Livre allocates residency grants to translators to provide support for translators from other countries who wish to live
in France while working on a translation of French works. Click here for information about these grants. To apply for a grant, you must contact the booking office in London (tel: 0207 073 1318).

The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation (GBSF)

Since it was established nearly 20 years ago, GBSF has given nearly £10 million in grants to support activities which 'make a difference' in UK-Japan relations. These include visits, performances, research, conferences and publications in fields as varied as arts & culture, medicine and health, humanities and social sciences, as well as Japanese language teaching and youth exchanges. The Korea Literature Translation Institute (LTI Korea)

LTI Korea is a government-subsidised institute that has been formed to help promote Korean literature abroad. One of our activities is to provide financial assistance for the translation and overseas publication of Korean literature. Click here to go to the website for further details.

Welsh Literature Abroad

WLA exists to facilitate the translation of Wales’ literatures and to promote these literatures internationally. It promotes the sale of translation rights and publishers can apply for translation grants towards the cost of translating Welsh and English language literary works in to other languages
