Translating the Bible

Texts

1) The Torah, The five Books of Moses (The Jewish Publication Society of America, 1982.)

 

1. When God began to create the heaven and the earth

2. the earth being unformed and void, with
darkness over the surface of the deep and a wind from God sweeping over the water.

3. God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

4. God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light
from the darkness.

5. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening
and there was morning, a first day.

 

2) The First Book of Moses commonly called GENESIS ( RSV, The Oxford Annotated Bible, 1962.)


1. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.
3. And God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

4. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.

5. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.
And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

 

3) Genesis (The New English Bible, 1970.)
The creation of the world


IN THE BEGINNING OF CREATION, when God made

 

1. Heaven and earth, the earth was without form and void, with darkness

2. Over the face of the abyss, and a mighty wind that swept over
the surface of the waters. God said, "Let there be light", and there was light;

3. And God saw that the light was good, and he separated light from darkness.

4. He called light day, and the darkness night. So evening came, and

5. Morning came, the first day.

 

4) At the start… Genesis made new (Mary Phil Korsak,1992; 93)


1. At the start Elohim created the skies and the earth
2. The earth was tohu-bohu darkness on the face of the deep and the breath of Elohim hovering on the face of the waters
3 Elohim said "Let light be Light" was
4 Elohim saw the light How good! Elohim separated the light from the darkness
5 Elohim called to the light "Day" To the darkness he called "Night" It was evening, it was morning One day
